2021 GCTDLBA DISTRICT SINGLES
Club Mermaid hosted this event . It was held over three days Saturday 23rd October to Monday 25th October,2021
Saturday ,23rd October saw one of the greens ,at Club Mermaid filled with ladies ready to scale the ladder to be awarded GCTDLBA District Singles Champion.
21 players entered and the competition was as hot as the weather.
At the end of day one, after playing two matches ,it was decided to hold the quarter finals on the Sunday.
Sunday,24th brought about the quarter finals with 8 players. They were Heather Hayward versing Margaret Panousis , Michelle Matheson taking on Gail Waitai, Jessie Cottell versing Serena Matthews and Vicki Day up against Carol Rankin.
Heather , Gail , Jessie and Vicki were all successful in their quarter final matches and progressed to the semi. Heather took on Gail and Jessie challenged Vicki.
By this stage not only were the bowls sizzling down the green ,the weather also decided to kick in and reached 31degrees. Both games were very intense with the score changing hands on many an occasion. At times when you looked at the green all 8 bowls were hugging the kitty. The players put on a skilful and talented show ,weaving their bowls through wee gaps to land with-in an inch of the kitty . At the conclusion of day only two player were left.
Gail defeated Heather 25 to18 and Jessie defeated Vicki 25 to 17.
Bring on Monday 25th . Finals
The day brought a cool relief which the girls were very happy about , but not for long. As the bowls heated up so did the weather.
The score see-sawed back and forth .The girls were showing the spectators how to play bowls. When one advanced a couple of shots the other dug deep and brought the score back to evens again . It was truely a game worthy of a final . A one stage ,Jessie got four and it brought the score to 19 -15 but Gail fought back and the score was even again. The girls played with such skill, and showed great respect for each other. At the end of the day we can only have one winner and that was Jessie Cottell. Jessie won the game 25 to 22. Congratulations Jess a fantastic win. Gail ,you too can hold your head high, well played.
